Zimbabwe drug mule jailed in the Western Cape

A young drug mule from Zimbabwe has been sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment in the Beaufort West Regional Court.

23-year-old Esther Chakaira was arrested in October 2018 near Beaufort-West during an integrated intelligence-driven operation.

Captain Malcolm Potjie reports that Chakaira was apprehended after 1kg of Tik was found in the luggage compartment of a passenger bus that was travelling through Beaufort West towards Cape Town.

The drugs had an estimated street value of R350 000.

Chakaira will now spend the next 15 years of her life behind bars after the Magistrate sentenced her to 14 years for the drug-offence and a further year-imprisonment for being in the country illegally.
