Five youths who escaped from a correctional youth centre in George and then brutally attacked a woman, applied for legal aid in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's court on Wednesday.
The group of teenagers are charged with assaulting 53-year old Jacolene du Preez, a well known artist from Albertinia, in her art gallery near the Gouritz river Bridge last week. She was left for dead after the attack.
The youths were arrested a short while later when police spotted them on the N2 highway. They remain in custody and will appear in court again on the 6th of July.
