The young girl hit by a stray bullet during the Uitenhage protests has died in hospital.
Uitenhage police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart has named the victim as 10 year-old Marisha Speelman.
Swart told AlgoaFM news that an initial investigation of attempted murder had now being uprgraded to an investigation of murder.
Earlier, Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the girl had been found in Blikkiesdorp at Uitenhage on Thursday night and had been admitted to Uitenhage provisional hospital in a critical condition before being transferred to Livingston hospital.
Meanwhile, 9 more people were arrested at Uitenhage on Friday on charges of public violence and contempt of court.
Four others were arrested a day earlier during three days of rioting sparked by unhappiness over a lack of housing in the area.
Warrant Officer Swart says the situation is calm in the area at the moment.
