A young man from Amanzimtoti in KwaZulu-Natal is missing, presumed drowned, near Port Alfred.
The station commander of the National Sea Rescue Institute at the town, Juan Pretorius, says they were alerted at about seven o'clock last night that a 22-year-old man had been caught in a rip current.
The incident happened at Kasouga, about 16 kilometres west of Port Alfred.
Pretorius says a security official who also responded, initially spotted the man, but lost sight of him by the time the NSRI arrived.
They used a rescue craft as shore patrols to search for the man, but called it off due to fading light.
Police have now taken over the search operation.
