Yet another postponement in Panayiotou trial, as accused falls ill


The pre-trial conference in the case against murder accused businessman, Christopher Panayiotou and his three co-accussed was postponed to fifth of September. 

Panayiotou, Sinethemba Nenembe, Sizwezakhe Vumazonke and recently arrested Zolani Sibeko briefly appeared in the city's high court on Thursday morning.

Panayiotou is accused of orchastrating the abduction and murder of his school teacher wife, Jayde, in April last year.

State Prosecutor, Marius Stander, requested the matter to stand down after it was revealed that Vumazonke had fallen ill while in custody at St Albans prison.

Vumazonke's attorney, Advocate Hannelie Bakker told the court that Zumazonke has been sick for the past two weeks.

Bakker said Vumazonke's cellmate, Nenembe, told his attorney that he has not been able to walk properly.

According to Nenembe he had to assist Vumazonke.

Bakker requested that Vumazonke be taken to the Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital for immediate medical attention.

She also asked for him to placed at the prison's medical facility.

Judge Glenn Goosen, said although the matter will be remanded, a pre trial hearing was to ensure that everyone would present at the trial.

Goosen added that it was not necessary for Vumazonke to attend the pre-trial.

The trial is set to start on the 10th of October.
