Port Elizabeth police are searching for two suspects who robbed the post office at Swartkops this morning.
The SA Social Security SASSA announced earlier this week that it would be making its December monthly-grant payments from Thursday.
Police captain Andre Beetge said two suspects were standing in the SASSA queue and then produced firearms.
He says they ordered staff to open the safe and fled with a substantial amount of money before fleeing on foot.
No shots were fired and police hope to make an arrest soon.
Sassa said in a statement issued earlier this month that the early December payment should not be seen as a bonus or double payment as it is mainly intended for the convenience of beneficiaries.
The following grant payment will be on the 29th of December.
