Police in Gqeberha are investigating a case of attempted murder after a wounded man drove himself to the Greenacres Hospital for medical treatment.
The man, whose identity is known to Algoa FM, arrived at the hospital in a white Volkswagen Polo, pleading for help on Tuesday morning.
According to an eyewitness who had just been discharged, the drama unfolded at about 10.40 when he saw the victim in his car with a gun still in his hand.
He said the man was wearing what looked like a bulletproof jacket and opened his driver's door pleading for help and stating that he could not walk.
The eyewitness said a nurse eventually ran out to assist him, while his wife arrived at the hospital about 10 minutes later.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said his vehicle was riddled with bullet holes.
She says police investigators were unable to talk to the victim as he was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.
Janse van Rensburg said a case of attempted murder was opened and police would interview the victim as soon as possible to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his injuries.
