A construction worker who works at the Msikaba Bridge construction site in Lusikisiki has died.
The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) says the man, who worked for one of the sub-contractors died on site.
A spokesperson Shaanaaz Loggenberg says an internal investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the accident which is also being investigated by police.
She says they are working closely with the contractors to uncover what led to the accident as the safety of their workers is of paramount importance.
The Msikaba Bridge contract forms part of SANRAL's flagship N2 Wild Coast Road Development project that starts in East London and ends along the border of the Eastern Cape province and KwaZulu-Natal.
The name of the deceased has not yet been released.
Loggenberg says before this tragic incident, the Msikaba Bridge construction site held an exemplary record of over 3,5 million loss time injury-free hours.
The Msikaba Bridge project is expected to be completed in February 2024 and on completion, it will be the third-highest bridge on the African continent.
