Woodridge College near Van Stadens west of Port Elizabeth has announced the end of the school year immediately in terms of being on campus.
The school said in a statement issued on Wednesday that the Grade 12 learners, who write the Independent Examination Board exams, will continue towards the completion of finals next Wednesday 25 November.
Grade 10 and 11 exams will continue online and Grade 8 and 9's will not write this week.
Woodridge Primary School’s academic year ends with immediate effect.
College Headmaster Derek Bradley says the decision was taken on the back of medical advice that they close the school, given the dramatic increase of positive Covid-19 cases in both the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and Sarah Baartman District.
Bradley said they had also seen an increase in the percentage of positive COVID tests for both pupils and staff on campus.
Meanwhile, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, says 2020 will go down as the most challenging, complex and unpredictable academic year.
Providing a progress report on day 11 of the matric exams on Wednesday, she said schools will for the first time reopen before the results are released.
Marking commences on the 4th of January with the results expected to be released on the 22nd of February 2021.
Motshekga says the Council of Education Ministers also expressed disappointment at the leaking of an exam paper, warning there could be serious consequences for pupils involved.
