Women lay false rape charges to get HIV-status and drugs

Several women make themselves guilty by laying false charges of sexual assault at the Mossel Bay Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

Police members and doctors end up spending time and effort by investigating charges of sexual assault that never actually happened.

According to sources, women allegedly often lay false charges to get hold of their HIV status and in some instances; they hope to get hold of anti-retroviral medicine.

In a recent incident, a 22-year-old woman from Mossel Bay reported an apparent rape at the local FCS- unit. This led to the arrest of a 37-year-old suspect.

During further investigation it was however discovered that the woman was in fact never raped and that she gave a false report.

According to police this type of false complaints happens often and especially over weekends. The woman will now face possible charges of perjury as she gave amongst others a false testimony under oath.
