A 35-year-old woman was rescued after she was swept out to sea by rip currents at Eastern Beach in East London on Thursday.
National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Craig Lambinon says when the rescuers arrived at the scene, they found the woman was already rescued.
He says it appears that a man had rescued the woman and attempted CPR.
During CPR, the woman coughed up water before starting to breathe normally.
Lambinon said it appeared that a group of people had partied on the beach throughout the night and the incident happened in the early hours of the morning when some of them decided to go for a swim.
