Graaff-Reinet police have started an investigation after the body of a woman was found on Monday afternoon in Stockenstroom street.
Warrant Officer Hannes Theron says the cause of death will only be determined once an autopsy has been conducted.
He told Algoa FM News that the woman was in her 50's and that she had some kind of wound to the head.
The name of the deceased will only be released once her next of kin have been informed.
Theron says on Facebook it was mentioned that the victim was murdered and raped, but that none of this can be determined until an autopsy has been done.
