Knysna detectives have made a breakthrough in their investigation into the assault of a woman that took place at Myoli Beach on Sunday.

Sergeant Chris Spies says a 34-year-old suspect was arrested at Sedgefield on Monday.

He says a 33-year-old woman had parked her car at the beach shortly before 7 pm on Sunday and gone for a walk on the beach with her small dog.

Sergeant Spies says moments later, she was accosted by the suspect and forced into the bushes where she was assaulted.

He says that following the assault, the attacker grabbed the victim's personal belongings, including her dog, and fled in her Volkswagen Polo.

Sergeant Spies says the victim, who sustained a serious head injury, sought assistance at a nearby residence where a homeowner alerted authorities and then set off in pursuit of the suspect.

The man tried to stop the perpetrator at Dover Street in Sedgefield but he got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

Sergeant Spies says the suspect is expected to appear in court on Wednesday after being tracked down and arrested at Smutsville in Sedgefield.

He said more charges could be added as the investigation unfolds.

Sergeant Spies told AlgoaFM News that the victim's dog was found unharmed after the incident.
