The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says it is aware of large-scale electricity outages across the metro, caused by the Chatty substation that has tripped.
It says this has affected all areas fed from the Rowallan Park, Chelsea, Lorraine, Summerstrand, Arlington, Greenbushes, and Bloemendal substations.
Executive Mayor, Retief Odendaal says although they have little information as to the cause, they have reason to believe that it is likely to have been caused by intent.
He says the Metro suspended seven officials within the Electricity and Energy Directorate last week after a preliminary forensic investigation uncovered proof of corruption.
Odendaal says since Friday some staff had been intimidated in an attempt to prevent them from working and this led to certain areas having extended electricity outages over the weekend.
He says on Sunday they received further information that some officials were planning a total shutdown of the City caused by large-scale blackouts.
Odendaal says there is also an apparent plan to hold both him and the City Manager hostage at City Hall.
