Wheelchair-bound man shot dead at Gqeberha clinic

File

Police in Gqeberha are investigating the murder of a one-legged, wheelchair bound man at the Missionvale Clinic on Monday.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, said 35-year-old Sonwabile Menze, whose leg was recently amputated, went to the facility with his brother for a “check-up”, and were on the premises but not inside the facility, when three men arrived.

He said upon spotting Menze and his brother, two of them drew firearms, and began shooting.

Beetge said Menze's brother fled inside into the clinic and was unharmed, but his brother sustained several gunshot wounds and died on the scene.

The motive for the shooting is not yet known and the search for the gunmen continues.

Meanwhile, the Public Servants Association says the incident highlights the alarming reality about safety in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Spokesperson, Riaan Vosloo, said they were appealing to Eastern Cape provincial authorities to take proactive measures to protect the public and staff at state facilities.

He said the Public Servants Association believes that the current allocation of security personnel is insufficient to effectively manage security challenges at the clinic.

Vosloo says this impeded the ability to protect the community and clinic employees who were severely traumatised by the incident.

“The PSA calls for urgent intervention by both provincial and local government authorities to ensure the safety of public institutions, which have increasingly become targets for criminal activity," he added.
