Whale carcass to be "cremated" in Garden Route

A Whale carcass that washed up on Brenton-on-Sea beach in November is to be cremated.

The executive mayor of Knysna Mark Willemse said the "cremation" will last for about a week.

The beach was closed for some time last year as the municipality together with SANParks and Cape Nature made plans to remove the carcass.

Willemse on Monday said that the decomposing carcass had resurfaced at the same beach.

He said the carcass will now be burnt in line with the Large Marine Animal Stranding Policy.

The portion of the beach will be closed for public during this time.

The team involved with the cremation decided to use driftwood as fuel.

The fire will be monitored throughout the process and if there are changes to the weather patterns, the fire will be extinguished and reignited when conditions are safe.
