Western and Southern Cape police in massive drugs bust

Western and Southern Cape police have arrested six suspects and confiscated drugs worth more than R18 million in a continued crack-down on the transportation of narcotics through the province's main entry and exit points.

Captain Malcolm Potjie says members attached to the Central Karoo K-9 unit pulled over a suspicious-looking bakkie travelling through Beaufort-West in the direction of Cape Town early on Monday morning.

Police found 52 bags of Tik weighing 52.2 kg and with an estimated street value of just more than R18 million hidden in different compartments and panels of the bakkie.

Two men aged 41 and 43 appeared in court on Monday and were remanded in custody until the 28th of December for a formal bail application.

In other incidents at the weekend, George detectives seized 20 kgs of dagga valued at R40 000 rand and arrested two Tanzanian nationals.

And: Two occupants of a white VW Polo were arrested when police discovered 199 Mandrax tablets, valued at about R10 000, hidden in their luggage near Beaufort West.

One of the suspects is only 18 years old.
