Well known Port Elizabeth community leader John Allen has died.
He died in St George's Hospital early Tuesday morning after a brief illness.
He was 82.
Allen served as the provincial coordinator for the National Welfare Social Service and Development Forum.
He also served on the boards of the Algoa Bay Council for the Aged, Community Chest, a past president of the Algoa Bay Rotary Club and served on the fund-raising committee of the E.P Children’s Home.
Community Chest, chief executive, Beulah Lumkwana, says Allen was her mentor.
"When I heard the news yesterday (Monday) that he was in a coma I was saddened by that. Then, this morning (Tuesday) I woke with more bad news. John Allen was really my first director or boss at Community Chest and he taught me what I know today," she said.
"All the experience and wisdom I have in our field was coming from him."
Allen's funeral service will take place at 2pm on Saturday at St Saviour's in First Avenue, Walmer, Port Elizabeth.
