A prisoner in the Wellington Prison in Mthatha was caught on Saturday morning hiding a gun in a box of cereal.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Mzukisi Fatyela says police found a firearm in a box of Weet-Bix, five rounds of ammunition in a packet of sugar and Okapi knives in a chips packet in the 40-year-old prisoner's cell.
Three other prisoners were also linked to the weapons.
Fatyela says the man was arrested in 2004 and sentenced in 2006 for murder.
He says the prisoner could face additional charges.
