Wave of protests hit the Eastern Cape

A wave of protests has hit the Eastern Cape - with some of them centered around Alice, where the centenary celebrations at Fort Hare University are due to be held on Friday.

This, against the backdrop of this week's student protests, during which university property was vandalised and a marquee tent erected for today's event, was set alight.Among the dignitaries due to attend today, are President Jacob Zuma and his Zimbabwean counterpart, Robert Mugabe.Strict security measures are in place at the campus. Our news desk has received reports from listeners suggesting that protesters have blocked the N2 at places between East London and King Williams Town, which is also the main road to Alice.

A police spokesperson, Lieutenant Nkoshikho Mzuku, says the road was cleared in the Fort Jackson-area a short while ago. However, there have been reports of road blockages in the King Williams Town area.

We have also received reports of disruptions on the R75 main road between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage in the vicinity of NMMU's Vista campus. We are awaiting statements from police about these protests or disruptions.
