The Department of Water and Sanitation said on Tuesday it had delivered 1279 water trucks and over 40 water tankers to various communities in the Eastern Cape to combat the spread of COVID-19.
Earlier this month, Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu committed that they would immediately increase water provision to remote areas and informal settlements across the country to fight the spread of the Coronavirus.
The Department announced that Rand Water has been appointed to coordinate all other entities responsible for water provision in various communities in the country.
Furthermore, it had unlocked “stumbling blocks” which had the potential to delay the provision of water in Alfred Nzo, Amathole, Joe Gqabi, Chris Hani, OR Tambo, Buffalo City, Nelson Mandela Bay, Sarah Baartman and Makana Municipalities.
Water Quality Practitioners are expected to ramp up their efforts of ensuring the delivered water is of the required standard.
Minister Sisulu urged communities to safeguard the water infrastructure as vandalism could have an adverse impact on service delivery.
She also pleaded with them to use water sparingly as the province is still faced with acute water challenges to the effects of drought.
