Water and sanitation issues at Makana municipality under the spotlight

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Makonyane, will visit the Makana Municipality on Friday to get an overview of the status water and sanitation issues within the municipality.

The Municipality at Grahamstown has been experiencing water and sanitation issues for almost a decade.

Makonyane says aging infrastructure, lack of proper maintenance and the increase in the number of people who require water services, are some of the factors that might have played a role in the Makana water issue.

"Makana is at a better situation now. We have brought in senior managers and technical experts. We expect working together with Minister Pravin Gordhan to build capacity in that municipality, because part of the Back to Basics programme is about building capacity of local government to deliver."
