Warrant of arrest for man accused of dragging dog

The court case involving a prominent Knysna businessman accused of dragging his dog behind his sports car earlier this year was postponed yet again after he failed to appear in court on Tuesday.

A warrant of arrest was issued by the Knysna Magistrate's Court after Petrus Meyer, 65, and the matter postponed until January 12. The warrant will be held over until his next appearance.
This was his second missed court appearance since his arrest in June this year.
Meyer faces charges of animal cruelty after allegedly tying a rope around the neck of his young female ridge-back called Gina and dragging the dog behind his vehicle in Galjoen Street in Brenton-on-Lake on June 11.

Bystanders, who saw the incident unfold, managed to put an end to the torture and ensured the dog received the necessary veterinary care.
The animal suffered several injuries, but managed to survive the ordeal.

Meyer's other dog, a bull-mastiff named Benji, was also taken out of his care shortly after the incident following negotiations with the Knysna Animal Welfare Society (Kaws).
