Two correctional services officials at St Albans prison outside Port Elizabeth have been stabbed in the latest attack reported from the facility.
Eastern Cape Correctional Services Commissioner, Nkosinathi Breakfast, confirmed the incident to Algoa FM News on Monday morning.
"On Sunday morning at about ten o clock two offenders attacked and stabbed two officials. We do not know the reason but we believe that the reason is the continuous gangster activities in that facility, particularly in Medium B. There is no stability or order"
Commissioner Breakfast says other correctional officers had to use the necessary force to rescue their two colleagues, who he says were not seriously injured but traumatised by the attack.
He also painted a grim picture of the life of a correctional officer at St Albans prison.
"It is the officials responsibility to ensure that offenders are protected, but officials come to work at the facility not knowing whether they are going back home to see their families, because of continuous attacks" he said
