Police in Butterworth have arrested sixteen students from Walter Sisulu University following violent protests along the N2.
Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha says the road was blocked early on Wednesday morning by the students who were throwing stones at a truck driver..
"This morning around 03:00 the N2 alongside Walter Sisulu University was blocked allegedly by the students. A truck coming from Port Elizabeth to Durban was pelted with stones, the truck drivers cell phone was also stolen. Grievances that we are aware of, is that they want to be taught by their lecturers who are currently on a go slow, that's what we heard." says Manatha
Manatha says the protest action also took place on Tuesday afternoon but not to the extent of Monday's events.
Police are further investigating cases of robbery and malicious damage to property.
Walter Sisulu University management announced on Tuesday that it was closing its four campus in East London, Mthatha and Butterworth indefinitely because of a labour dispute with university employees - now into its 5th week.
