Walter Sisulu University mourns loss of first year student

Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape has confirmed that a first-year student at its Butterworth campus had been murdered.

WSU said in a statement on Wednesday that the body of the National Diploma Civil Engineering student was found outside a tavern not far from the campus on Saturday night.

“According to the deceased’s friends, it was just after 10 pm when they decided to go looking for her as she had not returned from the bathroom for over 10 minutes,” said WSU spokesperson, Yonela Tukwayo.

“The University condemns acts of violence of any nature on and off campus. Violence against women and children has reached unprecedented proportions that should be a great concern to everyone,” she said.

No further details were made available and Tukwayo said WSU was still waiting for an official report from the South African Police Service.
