Walter Sisulu University has extended the deadline for students to vacate its four campuses to Friday.
Initially management said that students had to clear all the campuses by noon on Wednesday as it could not guarantee the students safety amid a five week old wage strike by employees.
Sixteen students were also arrested in Butterworth on Wednesday following a protest against the closure-order by the university.
University spokesperson, Angela Church, says 12 students were injured during the protest.
