Police in Gqeberha opened an inquest docket after one person drowned when a vehicle plunged into the North End lake in Milner Avenue, Sydenham on Friday evening.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu says at this stage it is unclear what had caused the accident.
She says two passengers, both aged 23, survived and were taken to hospital for further treatment.
Colonel Naidu says the 27-year old driver was trapped inside the vehicle and drowned.
She says the next-of-kin of the deceased has not yet been notified.
