Eskom says several villages in the Elliotdale area are without power after vandals cut down an electric pole.
The power utility says the incident took place in an administrative area, disrupting electricity supply to several communities.
“Due to this act of vandalism, the entire Bafazi administrative area is currently without electricity.
“These criminal acts leave scores of communities without electricity for days and this is a safety risk for the public.
“Low-hanging wires and those on the ground pose a threat to the safety and wellbeing of not only the affected communities but also its surrounding environment,” Eskom said in a statement on Friday.
The utility said technicians have been on site to assess the extent of the damage, but it said due to wet conditions accessing the area is proving to be difficult.
Eskom said the supply will be restored as soon as possible and appealed to customers to be patient and treat all electrical appliances “as live” during this time.
