'Unremorseful nurse' sentenced to 8 years for assaulting elderly

A 42-year-old nurse who assaulted an elderly lady at an upmarket old age home in Berea, East London was sentenced to eight years in prison on Thursday.

Ncediswa Mkhencele was filmed with a hidden camera which showed the brutal assault on the 84-year-old Hope Shepard.

Shepard died seven months after the incident.

In January this year Mkencele was found guilty on five counts of the contravention of the Old Persons Act.

Magistrate Ignatius Kitching said Mkencele was not remorseful for the crime as she justified her actions.

He added that she did not show any care towards the late Shepard as a professional, who was trained for the job, as she had tied her up in her wheelchair for more than five hours.

Mkencele resigned from the old age home shortly after being confronted with the video.
