University of Fort Hare reopens following student protest

The University of Fort Hare re-opened on Friday following a two- day closure due to a student protest at the Alice campus.

The protest, reportedly over fees, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and a water problem at the university, started on Tuesday night.

The university's Khotso Moabi said the students were protesting outside the campus gates on Thursday.

The situation was calm on Friday and Moabi said the university would continue engaging with students to find a way forward.

Meanwhile, he said the university will only start it's investigation into the vandalising of property and the burglary of two book stores on campus either later today or on Monday.

According to police in Alice, students broke into by forcing the roller door open and broke the glass door.

Captain, Siyasanga Nontshinga said the merchandise looted included tablets, laptops and kitchen utensils.  She said goods worth more than an estimated R1.9m were stolen.

Moabi said the university will not be able to start it's internal investigations until the protest has died down completely.

"The University, for the last 48 hours, has been closed in terms of the Alice campus. Today (Fri), the campus is quiet and we are trying to continue with administrative work, currently we are quiet but we will continue to engage with students for the remainder of the day" he said.

Moabi said lectures at the university will resume on Monday.
