All the accused have pleaded not guilty to a slew of charges, including murder and attempted murder, the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and theft.
Police investigator, colonel Lungisile Manyana, told the court on Tuesday that an undercover agent had been placed at the company transporting the platinum, in an attempt to infiltrate a crime syndicate.
He said the agent was first contacted by the syndicate in August 2011.
Manyana testified that information obtained by undercover operatives led to the police's National Intervention Unit foiling the robbery.
