The Eastern Cape Transport Department says it is working with relevant national Departments to assist the families of the United Kingdom visitors who were killed in a grim accident on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth on Monday.
Three people died and two others were taken to hospital with critical injuries after their vehicle, towing a trailer, went out of control on the N2 and plunged off the Swartkops Bridge, ending up in the water below.
"We are truly saddened by this tragic incident. On behalf of the government and people of the Eastern Cape, I would like to extend our sincere condolences and sympathy to the families and friends of those who have passed on," said MEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe.
"Our prayers are also with those injured and recuperating in hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery," she added.
MEC Tikana-Gxothiwe also took the opportunity to urge all road users to stay focused on the road and to drive responsibly.
A culpable homicide case is under investigation.
