Uitenhage shop assistant killed in armed robbery

Uitenhage police are investigating two business robberies, including one where a shop assistant was fatally wounded.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkhohli, said 28-year-old shop assistant Melkamu Kelbore was shot and killed when two men, one of whom was armed, stormed into the Friendly Mini Market in Oak Street early on Wednesday night.

He said the gunmen stole an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing.

In the second case, Sergeant Nkohli said a shot was fired but no one injured when two men robbed the King Spaza Shop in Kamesh, also on Wednesday night.

He said the men fled in white Ford Fiesta with Gauteng registration plates after taking cash, cellphones and cigarettes.

Nkohli's appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
