Uitenhage security officer arrested for illegal hunting

A Uitenhage security officer arrested for illegal hunting could still be fired by his employer if found guilty.

The security officer, who was on duty at the time, was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning by police members on the R-75 near the Springs Resort outside the town.

Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, said the saps members became suspicious when they spotted a man standing next to a security vehicle and another man in nearby bushes carrying a bright light.

She said on closer inspection the police discovered the carcass of a bushbuck which had been shot.

The two suspects were arrested on the spot for illegal hunting, the vehicle and two firearms with ammunition were confiscated.

Meanwhile, George Bezuidenhout of Isidingo Security Services said that they are conducting their own investigation as well.

Bezuidenhout also confirmed to Algoa FM News that the firearms confiscated belonged to the company.

He said the company has a zero tolerance approach to illegal hunting.

The two suspects will appear before the Uitenhage Magistrates Court on Thursday.
