Uitenhage man to make second court appearance for fatal hit and run

Fernando Douglas (27) facing charges of culpable homicide

A man who allegedly fled the scene of a fatal car accident along Old Cape Road in Uitenhage last month will make his second court appearance on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Fernando Douglas was arrested at his home in Uitenhage a day after the accident following a tip-off to police.

It is alleged that Douglas drove into a broken down Opel Monza that was being pushed by two people with the driver still inside.

The 38-year-old Maxwell Peyi died at the scene.

Captain Gerda Swart says Douglas allegedly got out of his car and told the men that he needed to get a cellphone to call for help, but never returned.

Douglas, who is out on bail of R800, is facing three charges including culpable homicide, failure to establish injuries and the failure to establish the damage.

Police also confiscated his blue Nissan Micra as part of their investigation.
