Uitenhage police are appealing to members of the public who may have purchased cars from a local dealership to come forward.
Police spokesperson, warrant officer Gerda Swart, says they're interested in people who bought cars from Monte Carlo Motors in Constitution Street between January 2011 and January this year.
Owner, 65-year-old Simon van Vuuren, has been charged with motor vehicle theft.
He was arrested in December for being in posession of suspected stolen cars but the charge was changed this week following a wider investigation into the theft of vehicles in the Western and Eastern Cape.
Van Vuuren is out on bail of R20 000.
Meanwhile, one unsupecting member of the public who bought a Toyota Tazz from Monte Carlo Motors says he is carless and out of pocket by R50 000.
Police have seized a total of 31 cars, 28 of which had been stolen in the Western Cape and three in Port Elizabeth.
Tony Xolile from Uitenhage told Algoa FM News that police arrived at his home in December with documents pertaining to the purchase of the vehicle from Monte Carlo Motors.
He said he was told to take his vehicle to a place where it was checked and verified as stolen.
Xolile said he has been without transport for nearly two months, and remains indebted to the tune of R50.000.
"I am using public transport now ever since December. I made a personal loan (to buy the car), I'm paying the loan for a car which I don't have. This is painful," he said.
