Two suspects were shot dead by Nelson Mandela Bay Crime Combatting Unit members following an armed robbery at a Vusumzi street tavern in Joe Slovo on Tuesday night.
Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says a gang of six gun-wielding men struck just before 9 pm and fled with patrons cell phones and an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register.
She says the armed robbers were confronted by police as they exited the tavern and two of them were shot dead while four of them managed to escape.
A 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off and six rounds of ammunition were recovered at the scene.
Captain Janse van Rensburg say police also seized a signal jammer, CCTV camera, the cellphone of the tavern owner and a grey Toyota Corolla which was reported stolen in November 2022 in Motherwell.
Police have opened an inquest and are investigating cases of business robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The search for the four remaining suspects continues and anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to contact their nearest police station.
