The Hawks in the Eastern Cape said two suspects, aged 17 and 18, are in custody in connection with the murder of Gqeberha policeman, Constable Callan Andrews.

Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mkhakuvana, said in a statement on Saturday that the pair also face a charge of robbery of a state firearm.

He said they are due to appear in court on Monday, adding that more arrests were imminent.

The 29-year-old police Constable, who was attached to Gelvandale SAPS died in hospital on New Year’s Eve, after being shot and robbed of his service pistol on Voisen Street shortly after he and community members helped push a stricken police vehicle.

Meanwhile, a peaceful march is expected to take place Gqeberha on Sunday afternoon to protest against police killings.

The march will also honour ‘rookie” Constable Andrews, whose first day on the job was on 1 October according to a post on Facebook.

The march under the #Justice for Callan will take place at 3 pm from the parking lot at the Gelvandale clinic.

According to a notice, it will proceed to the police station where a memorandum will be presented to Gelvandale SAPS, and thereafter to the spot where the incident occurred.

In a special appeal, Callan’s father Brett, called on those taking part not to display any party-political affiliation, warning that anyone who does so will not be allowed to participate.

The dress code for the march is black and people are asked to bring along a blue balloon which will be released during Sunday’s proceedings.
