A 41-year-old man is due to appear in an Eastern Cape court on Monday after being found with commercial explosives and detonating cord.
Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiw Mkhlauvana, said the man was arrested on Friday after members of a task team executed a warrant at a homestead in the Libode area.
He said the arrest was part of an ongoing investigation into claims that the suspect was allegedly planning to bomb automated teller machines.
Mhlakuvana said upon searching the man’s premises police discovered a bag containing eight commercial explosives as well as “yellow and white” cords, believed to be detonating cords..
The suspect was arrested for being in possession of explosives, and he is expected to appear before Ngqeleni Magistrate’s court on 6 January.
