Two Eastern Cape cops charged with corruption and extortion made their first appearance before the Mbizana Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
Forty-three-year-old Sergeant Mawethu Mtimkhulu and 46-year-old Sergeant Xolani Nqoko were arrested on Tuesday.
Their arrest is linked to an incident where the victim, Zwelinkosi Ntakana, was hijacked by two unknown males while travelling to Flagstaff.
Following the incident, Ntakana received a call from a Mbizana police officer who tried to extort R5000 from him for a gun found in his car which he said was linked to several murders.
Hawks spokesperson, Yolisa Mgolodela, says the incident was reported and the ransom was transferred to the officer's bank account which led to their arrest.
The two cops will appear in court on Monday for a formal bail application.
