Two people arrested for illegal possession of abalone in Port Elizabeth


Port Elizabeth police have arrested two people from Bridgemead for the possession abalone valued at aproximately R50 000.

Police spokesperson, Captain Johan Rheeder confirmed their arrests but could not comment further on the matter.

Algoa FM News understands that the 26-year old man and 23-year old woman were arrested on Thursday at a townhouse in Bridgemead.

Three hundred units of abalone packed in plastic bags were reportedly found in a deepfreezer. A vehicle was also seized.

Both suspects will appear in court on Friday.

Meanwhile, a 59-year old man has appeared in court for the possession of abalone valued at R90 000.

The man was reportedly released on bail on Thursday following his arrest on Tuesday on the N-2 near St Albans.

Rheeder said earlier that the Organised Crime Unit and The Hawks have taken over the investigation.
