Two suspects are due to appear in court in Port Elizabeth today on charges of hijacking and attempted murder.
Police said the two, aged 18 and 19, were arrested in New Brighton on Wednesday following a high speed chase by members the PE Flying Squad and members of the Kwazakhele Task Team.They were responding to a complaint of a hijacking in Algoa Park.
Wednesday's incident was the third hijacking in Nelson Mandela Bay this week, with two incidents ending in tragedy.On Monday, 53-year-old Magda van Vuuren died after being shot in the back by a schoolboy who hijacked her gold BMW.
On Tuesday a man who hijacked a car in Kwanobuhle in Uitenhage was killed in a shoot-out with police on the N-2 later that night.
Police also reported two other hijackings of women in the city earlier this month.
According to crime statistics released by the Police Ministry, carjackings increased by 24.3% in the Eastern Cape.
