Two cases of armed robbery are being investigated by New Brighton Police in Port Elizabeth after two of their officers were robbed at gunpoint on Thursday.
Constable Mncedi Mbombo said two detectives were on investigation duties on Avenue E in New Brighton when they were confronted by three men who were sitting on the side of the road.
All three men pulled out firearms and forced the detectives to stop their car.
As they came to a halt, another seven men - also with firearms- emerged from a nearby railway line and force them out of the vehicle at gunpoint.
They body searched the police members and fled on foot with the keys to the state vehicles (which were later found) the member's cellphones, wallets and sunglasses.
No shots were fired and no-one was injured.
Constable Mbombo told AlgoaFM News that the police detectives were not carrying firearms.
Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man was sentenced in the Mount Frere Regional Court to two terms of life imprisonment plus 15 years for multiple rape cases.
Police spokesperson Captain Edith Mjoko, said the first incident happened in Ngqojini Location in Mount Frere back in 2016.
Mjoko said Manx Ntshobololo raped a 16-year-old while she was sleeping in her room at a local school in Mount Frere.
She said Ntshobololo then raped another victim in another area last year.
Mount Frere Cluster Commander, Brigadier Mtutuzeli Mtukushe, welcomed the court's verdict adding that it would serve as a deterrence to lawbreakers.
