Two PE men in court for allegedly shooting children

Two Port Elizabeth men appeared in court on Thursday in connection with the shooting of two children who were caught up in gang crossfire.

Police said 21-year-old Enrico Gerwel appeared in court for the murder of 12-year-old Alvineesha Brookes in Bloemendal at the end of last month.

Brookes was fatally wounded when rival gang members opened fire on each other.

Gerwel will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 24 June.

The incident sparked community outrage and an attack on a suspect gang member's house leading to the death of 25-year-old Tavern Moss and the serious assault on a 16-year-old youth.

Four people arrested in connection with the mob attack on Moss also appeared in court on Thursday on charges of murder, attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

Gregory Perring (49), Cayron January(18), Justin Malgas (21) and  Sivuyile Sihlahla(22) will remain in custody until their next court appearance on 9 April.

A fifth suspect, 30-year-old Enver Visagie, was arrested on Wednesday on a charge of malicious damage to property.  He was released on a warning and will appear in court again with the other suspects.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man also appeared in court today in connection with a separate gang shooting in Helenvale on Tuesday in which 3-year-old Clinton Williams was wounded in the stomach.

He is said to be making good progress in hospital.

Police said Kenton Horne faces a charge of attempted murder and will be back in court again on 11 April.
