Two PE cops suspended after hit and run accident

Eastern Cape police commissioner Celiwe Binta has ordered the suspension of two Constables from New Brighton who were involved in a hit-and-run accident early on Sunday morning.

Addressing a media briefing in Nelson Mandela Bay today, Lieutenant-General Celiwe Binta, also condemned the actions of the two police officials who fled the scene of the accident.

Twenty-three-year-old Phumlile Deyi, of Soweto-on-Sea, was allegedly run over while walking on the pavement in Stofile Street in New Brighton.

He died of head injuries.

General Binta says the matter was taken over by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate and the police vehicle examined.

She had some strong words for the two police Constables who also failed to report the incident to their commanding officer.

"Firstly, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late Phumlile Deyi. I visited the family today and offered the support of the South African Police Services.

Secondly, I want to strongly condemn the conduct of the officials involved in this incident. This is not the type of behaviour we expected from police officials and we are extremely let down by their poor display of discipline, professionalism and lack of care."

"The SAPS does not hesitate to act against their own and I have therefore ensured that notices of immediate suspension be served on the two members this morning. I wish to warn all other members of the SAPS who violate our code of conduct in the province that this organisation will not allow them to taint the good work of the majority of honest and hard-working officials."

"I also encourage members of the community not to hesitate in report poor conduct or (poor) service delivery by our members to their local station commanders. Such complaints are seen in a very serious light and action is taken against those who are found to have transgressed our code of conduct." she said
