Three people have been killed in an accident on the N2 near Qumbu on the way to Mthatha.
Eastern Cape provincial traffic deputy director Charles Bramwell says the accident happened around 5.30pm yesterday and involved three vehicles.
Bramwell says a Polo with two men from Mthatha, lost control, faced the opposite direction and collided head-on with a Toyota Tazz with four occupants including an 18-month-old girl.
He says the Polo then landed on top of the bakkie.
The little girl in the Tazz and the two occupants of the Polo were killed in the accident.
The mother of the deceased toddler was critically injured. Miraculously no-one on the bakkie was injured.
Speed and bad weather are being blamed for the accident and a case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
