A 25-year-old man who was found guilty of killing Gqeberha e-hailing driver Garrison Snayers has been given a double life sentence by the High Court.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Bathandwa Jabavu was found guilty of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances following the attack on Snayers in New Brighton in February 2021.
He was sentenced on Wednesday.
NPA spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said one of Jabavu’s accomplices, Wandisile Gawu, was killed in an unrelated matter before the trial began while a third turned state’s witness and was granted “immunity” from prosecution.
Snayers was ambushed and brutally murdered after responding to a request for a pick-up on an e-hailing service on the evening of 17 February 2021.
Police said at the time that the assailants took his money and cell phone after he was gunned down on Madala Street as he reportedly tried to flee.
The court heard that the suspects had summoned several drivers but then cancelled before settling on Snayers as their robbery target.
Tyali said the Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Barry Madolo commended the prosecutor and the investigating team in the matter.
