Two people have died while three sustained injuries in a head-on collision on the R72 outside Port Alfred.
The Eastern Cape Transport Department said the accident occurred on Tuesday night.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said a VW Polo with four occupants and a Ford sedan collided about five kilometres out of town and in the direction of Alexandria.
He said a man and a woman in the one car died on the scene while two injured men were rushed to a hospital.
Binqose said the driver of the second car, said to be in his seventies, sustained severe injuries and was also admitted to hospital.
The names of the deceased have not yet been released and Port Alfred police have opened a culpable homicide docket for further investigation.
