Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison Weziwe Tikana led traffic officials at a roadblock outside Mdantsane in East London on Tuesday.
She was joined by Amathole District Traffic Officers and Officials of her Department.
They were inspecting vehicles, particularly those carrying school children, for among other things, roadworthiness, over-loading, driver fitness and speeding.
Speaking to Algoa FM News from the roadblock, MEC Tikana, said 24 warrants had been issued while two arrests were made for overloading.
"What we have observed is that there's a high number of overloading and vehicles with no permits which are utilised in transporting learners," said MEC Tikana.
She says they've also picked up that parents also contracted the same drivers with whom her Department has contracts to provide scholar transport services.
MEC Tikana says "what happens now is that they overload because they (drivers) don't want to make many trips to transport learners to different schools. That is the challenge we found on the roads."
